Punta Sabbioni
The extreme west of the coast of Cavallino, which borders on the dam in northeastern mouth of the port of Venice-Lido, is the lighthouse at Punta Sabbioni, a reference point for passing tourists and the boats in transit to the lagoon from Venice.
The lighthouse is made of a metal structure in the shape of a pagoda with two terraces, painted checkered whites and blacks, which rises from a building of reinforced concrete to a height of 26 meters.
For the construction of the famous “pagoda” Punta Sabbioni it took 28 years: the work was in fact started in 1882 and ended in 1910.
In 1969, in conjunction with the work of resetting the jetty and the pagoda as a result of the exceptional sea storm of November 1966, the lighthouse was electrified and the transformer room on the ground floor of the pagoda; in 1974 it has been automated and the signal light is visible 15 miles away (about 25 Km.).
