Beautiful shores of the lake known as Lago d’Orta are a guarantee of a pleasant holiday in a mild climate of northern Italy. Lago d’Orta is the perfect venue for lovers of water sports and hiking. The lake is separated from another Italian lake Lago Maggiore by Mottarone mountain to the east and from the valley of the River Sesia by a mountain chain to the west.
This lake is one of the least visited Italian lakes, but at the same time it is one of the most beautiful parts of Italian nature. It is situated in the charming landscape on the Alpine foothills.

The main resort of Lago d’Orta is that of the town of Orta San Giulio. Its historic center is mainly made of palaces and houses with wrought iron balconies. Palazzo della Comunitá (1582) that can be found on Piazza Principale is decorated with frescoes. Church of Santa Maria Assunta of 15th century has a Romanesque portal, frescoes and paintings from the 17th century.
Above the town you will see the church of Sacro Monte (1591-1770), which is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi. The route to the church, from where you can enjoy a beautiful views of the lake and surrounded mountains, is lined with 21 mainly baroque chapels, where frescoes and statues depict scenes from the life of St. Francis.
In the middle of the lake you can see a romantic islet Isola San Giulio, which is a home to a basilica with remarkable pulpit of black marble dating back to the 12th century.
