Ischia town – attractive capital of Ischia island
Ischia is the main city of the Italian island with the eponymous name – Ischia. It is divided into two parts – the historic one is called Ischia Ponte and industrial one is Ischia Porto.
The city, which is situated on the east coast of the island, is home to about 16,000 inhabitants. Both parts of this city are very attractive.

Ischia Porto
Ischia Porto is, as it is apparent from its name, built around a port which has great importance for the island. It is the largest port on the island, which makes Ischia city to become an important trading center.
Ischia Porto is also an important social and administrative center of the island. This port was in ancient times a flooded volcanic crater that was in 1854 connected with the sea by the channel.
Ischia Porto is now very modern and quite lively part of the city. A major city’s attractions are the typical fish restaurants in the harbor and shopping street Via Roma or Corso Vittorio Colonna.

Ischia Ponte
Ischia Ponte is the older part of the town and its name could be translated as “Ischian bridge”. Originally a fishing village has grown into fairly large city that still retains its old Italian character.
The most important monument here is Castello Aragonese situated on a rocky outcrop in the city center. It was built in the 14th century and served as a fortress to defend the city from pirates.
